Furling the mainsail into the mast has become more or less standard on new cruising boats. The global mastmanufacturer Seldén, the established provider of this concept, is now launching a new generation of electric driven furling masts.
The drive unit uses a planetary gear which makes for a very compact installation and enables the system to be completely built into the mast. The gear features a permanently set brake system that secures the sail in the reefed position. The brake releases only when the motor is running.
The speed and maximum torque are factory-set. To prevent overload, the current cuts out if maximum torque is reached. It is then automatically reset, and ready to operate again after two seconds.
The system can also be operated with an emergency handle if there is a power loss.
